Archives For design

I don’t usually post using a lot words… but when I do it’s in frustration, or a rant :-)

I saw a tweet this morning, talking about the new Braun clock radio that is inspired by the older Dieter Rams design (by older I mean 59 years older). At first glance you see the similarities to the father of simplicity’s version… but then you realize… this is bull. they simply took a piece of crap walmart clock radio and made it white. If you look at the Dieter Rams phono you will notice no labels, everything has a purpose, everything is inviting and NO LABELS.  Just looking at the newer clock radio’s digital interface makes me sick… there is no thought behind it, they just added everything they could and hoped for the best.

I’m disappointed in the way industrial design is going for the mass market.  We have better technology, more advances in manufacturing but we can’t even copy a design from almost 60 years ago and get it right or make it better. All that matters to big manufacturers is the bottom dollar…

How cheap can we make it, and how many can we ship.

I refuse.
